Avox Zopera is a Havana-born, Iceland-raised rapper, singer and producer making dark Latin music in English and Spanish. Raised for most of his life at the famed Recycled House, home of his father, filmmaker Hrafn Gunnlaugsson, he grew up surrounded by an unconventional creative world. Piano lessons with Hanna Valdís since age three and a year as an exchange student in Japan also inform his music and witch imagery.

His cauldron series brings musical poems about psychology, solitude and self-acceptance to Instagram, TikTok and YouTube. Through both the series and his songs, he hopes to help people feel less alone. His debut was Diablo in 2025; his latest single is Listen.

The artist

Avox Zopera is a Havana-born, Iceland-raised rapper, singer and producer making dark Latin music in English and Spanish. His songs bring rap and sung vocals together with classical elements; his visual world is inhabited by witches, shadows and light. Behind that world is an artist who knows the difficulty of finding a place among other people, and who wants his music to offer a sense of recognition to anyone who needs it.

Roots

Half Cuban and half Icelandic, he was raised for most of his life at Iceland’s famed Recycled House, the home of his father, filmmaker Hrafn Gunnlaugsson, director of When the Raven Flies. Growing up in that unconventional setting helped shape his own taste for the unusual. A year in Japan as an exchange student later influenced both his artistic choices and his outlook on life.

Musical beginnings

He began piano lessons at three with Icelandic musician Hanna Valdís. Those weekly lessons continue today. A major influence on his musical development, she has become almost family to him. That enduring relationship gives the classical elements in his work a foundation in years of study and practice.

The late musician Hjörtur Howser, his teacher and an early studio producer, introduced him to recording and making music on a computer. Avox remembers him as both a mentor and a close friend. Howser died while Avox was a teenager; his role in those first studio experiences remains an important part of Avox’s musical story.

The cauldron

Much of his childhood was solitary, and social life did not come easily. As he grew older, he became more willing to connect with others and, gradually, to speak about struggles he had long kept private. He now finds peace in solitude while remaining open to meaningful connection. These experiences inform his interest in psychology, boundaries and self-acceptance.

His cauldron series turns those interests into short musical poems over his own production, shared on Instagram, TikTok and YouTube. Alongside his songs, it makes room for shadow and light, vulnerability and defiance. His hope is that the work helps someone feel understood, whether they seek it out or happen upon it.

After years of singing, he made his debut with Diablo in 2025. His catalogue also includes Hechizó, Pam Pam and his latest single, Listen, released on 10 April 2026. All four are available on Spotify, Apple Music and Amazon Music.
